Video music: "He's Funny That Way", Andrea Motis. Disk Emotional Dance (Impulse, 2017)
The Palau Robert proposes a sound and documental immersion in the feminine musical universe of the Catalan Countries to the exhibition “OF ONES: (R)evolució of the women in the music”, played the lead in by more than 1,000 feminine artists along the last century through compositions, songs and video clips.
The sample, which can be visited of the 10 November in the 23 April in the Room 3 of the Palau Robert of Barcelona, the Generalitat de Catalunya organizes, with the commissariat of the group Enderrock and the support of the Institute Català de les Dones.
“OF WAVES: (R)evolució of the women in the music” is a graphic and sound exhibition played the lead in by more than 1,000 feminine artists from all over the Catalan Countries along the last century that it visibilitza and at the same time a recognition towards its contributions makes in this cultural area. For the first time in our country an itinerary for the different musical genres is brought up with voice of woman through singers, composers and instrumentalists.
The itinerary sonor and visual it goes from the songs of cradle and the folklorists in the classical music, the opera and the contemporary, passing for the popular musics and of root, the poetry, the song of author, the jazz and the blues, the rock and the punk, the pop and the musics urban. In total, they will be able to listen him to themselves and view a thousand songs in the selectors of each of the stylistic areas of the exhibition; he owes spaces where the persons who visit them will be able to discover an original and unedited sound landscape with the most significant dates of the history of the Catalan music from a feminine viewpoint.
The evident sample an evolution for the quantitative as well as qualitative growth of voices of women through the propagation of musical styles in the last 100 years. In this period new positionings have appeared for the creators and the interpreters after a long time in which so many feminine voices have been silenced. The sample is a recognition towards the empowerment of the women in all the social, political and cultural spaces. And his vibrating points out its contributions as the vertiginous spiral and he bursts into melodies and songs.
The challenge of the exhibition is to offer a compromised journey, sonorous and graphic, for ten styles where the main ones echoe voices of Catalonia, the País Valencià and the Balearic Islands in a vital journey that originates from the songs of cradle, is educated in the classical one and drinks of the music of root, penetrates for the song and the jazz, bursts with the pop, the rock and the punk and leads to the urban musics of our streets full of energy.
As the referential poem deals with Maria-Mercè Marçal, the title “OF ONES: (R)evolució of the women to the music” remits to the sound revolt of the feminine panorama, which has not been gestated in a single day, but fruit of an evolution of centuries. This is the speech that is articulated in the exhibition, as it defends the commissioner and musical journalist in Enderrock, Helena Morén Alegret, and that the last years it has sped up and has been amplified with new formed and horizons.
“there was a period in which the women remained relegated to a paper secondary, as mothers who transmitted the songs for oral route or that studied the music under the shadow of a dark, authoritarian and patriarchal society. He arrived the moment which the songs of women made themselves listen with the projection to their deserving, coinciding with the feminist claims. The moment was from establishing canons and referents. Knocks of rock that routines, myths and symbols broke went, but also a revival to the scene of the current popular music that it did not have points the total recognition of the work of the women.
The prestige of the women in the music has been won and has been deserved by work, beyond the fashions and the styles. The evolution of the feminine genre has to do with coming out of the domestic egg in which it has been labeled and seeing that the laying hen was already there before and will be there afterwards. Some will beat with “The black eagle” adapted by Maria del Mar Bonet, others will make it with the flight of “The nightingale” of Lídia Pujol or Joan Baez, and there will be that they will agitate the wings with those “Bird Eyes” of Núria Graham. They are the women who raise the flight in the 21st century.”
