The “Catalonia Eco-design Award” exhibition, organised by the Ministry of Planning and Sustainability, hosts the two travelling exhibitions of the 2015 and 2017 Catalonia Eco-design Awards which display the winning entries and the ones that received a special mention from the judging panel. The 2015 awards are on show from 8 September to 18 October and their 2017 counterparts  in Room 4 at the Palau Robert.

The exhibition aims to bring eco-design closer to design professionals, students and the general public to publicise this concept and promote the consumption of eco-design products.

Since 2001 the Government of Catalonia has sponsored an award that recognises innovative, quality and environmentally-sustainable products to change production and consumption models. Initially it was a Design Award for Recycling, but since 2015 has been the Catalonia Eco-design Award while also expanding its scope to take in all the aspects involved in product sustainability such as saving resources, designing new consumption models, optimising end of life, etc.

The Award recognises products currently on the market, products under development and product promotion strategies which are designed to improve the environmental performance of products and services throughout their lifecycle. In addition it aims to encourage the inclusion of eco-design to drive the manufacture and consumption of sustainable products and services in Catalonia. The Award is part of the Catalan Eco-design Strategy (Ecodiscat) promoted by the Ministry of Planning and Sustainability in the Government of Catalonia.

Eco-design can be defined as the integration of environmental aspects into the design of a product or service in order to improve its environmental performance throughout its entire lifecycle. Eco-design is thus one of the tools which can help achieve a more efficient world in terms of resource use and at the same time boost the circular economy and generate jobs in our communities. Some companies are already using it, but it is still not a widespread strategy in the design of new products and services. Furthermore, consumer habits need to continue to evolve so that more people appreciate and ask for these new and more sustainable products and services.

The products on display in the exhibition are divided into four categories:

Category A: Product
Product on the market, designed or manufactured in Catalonia, where environmental considerations have been taken into account at the development stage with the goal of minimising its environmental impact during its life cycle.
Open to the individuals or legal entities that design or manufacture the product as long as the designer, manufacturing centre or company are located or have their registered office or headquarters in Catalonia.

Category B: Product under development
Design for a product, not yet manufactured or marketed (but at the prototype stage), which has been designed taking into account environmental considerations with the goal of minimising its environmental impact during its lifecycle.
Open to the individuals or legal entities that promote the development of a product design or its designer, as long as they have their registered office or headquarters in Catalonia.

Category C: Strategy
Initiative, policy, procedure or system, implemented or executed in Catalonia, which includes the use or promotion of products that have been designed taking into account environmental considerations at the development stage with the goal of minimising their environmental impact during their lifecycle.

Open to the individuals or legal entities that promote the strategy and have their registered office or headquarters in Catalonia.

Category D: Young design
Product already on the market, product under development or a strategy developed by students or by professionals at the beginning of their careers, where environmental considerations have been taken into account at the development stage with the goal of minimising its environmental impact during its lifecycle.
